East has won an invited competition to design a cultural-led masterplan for the old gasworks site on Foord Road in Folkestone, for client Creative Foundation as part of the ‘Pioneering Places’ programme.
East is leading a team with artist Paul Elliman to draw up a masterplan for the site that is able to inform negotiations and sequencing for new mixed-use development, and also able to inform the commissioning of artworks on and around the site for the fifth Folkestone Triennial in 2020.
HRH and Simon Ward are providing planning and economic advice.
Pioneering Places is part of the national Great Place Scheme, an ambitious project that will “make east Kent an even better place to live, work and visit” by exploring heritage, developing civic pride and connecting artists and communities.
Four exemplar projects in Canterbury, Dover, Folkestone and Ramsgate are also being led by local cultural organisations to influence policymakers and encourage any and all of the residents themselves to bring in change and become great placemakers.
